STORED PRODUCT PESTS
Weevils and moths are a terrible curse on your food storage. When you encounter them living in your pancake flour or chocolate it’s not very appetizing!
HOMEOWNERS: Your freezer is a great enemy to stored product pests. To eliminate the pest problem, freeze flour and other products for 48 hours after you bring them home from the store.
COCKROACHES, ANTS, RODENTS
Is your home the one in the neighborhood where all the kids hang out? If so, you are probably providing lots of fun activities along with plenty of snacks.
Homeowners: Make certain the kids don’t leave food in unexpected places around the house, or you might get unwelcome guests of cockroaches, ants and rodents! Insects and rodents only need a few crumbs to make a feast, and they love people food!
RODENT CONTROL
Rodents find all kinds of ways to enter your home so it's important to have an inspection for rodent proofing. Proper rodent proofing can eliminate entrances to your home, which rodents find just as comfy and cozy as you do. HOMEOWNERS: Keep trees and bushes trimmed back 3 feet from the roof so rats can't easily access the attic area of your home.
Mice and rats love to get inside your home where it's warm and dry. Openings only as big as a quarter allow access for adult rats, and mice only need ¼ of an inch. HOMEOWNERS: Add stiff bristle door sweeps to pedestrian doors to help keep mice & rats out of the garage, and make sure all doors close tightly.
APHIDS
Roses are a beautiful spring and summer flower but not when your bushes are attacked by aphids. HOMEOWNERS: When you spot aphids, use warm soapy water in a spray bottle and spray roses every evening after it cools down for ten days...it will help to get rid of the problem and won't burn your roses.
ANTS
Southern Californians just love entertaining outdoors, and unfortunately ants often become unwanted guests. Do you know that when you see ants, it's only 2-3% of the colony that is actually foraging above ground? HOMEOWNERS: To keep the ants away, after a party on the deck or patio, sweep it well and then wash it using a light application of soap to remove any sticky, sweet drinks or food that may have been dropped.
TERMITES
Termites love to swarm and start new colonies when the weather is warm. HOMEOWNERS: Move wood piles to the farthest area away from your house where the prevailing wind direction does not move toward your house. If termites attack the woodpile it will make it harder for them to reach your home.
BLACK WIDOWS
Black Widows are the most venomous spiders in the U.S. Often, because they are so common, people think they aren't “that bad”. Fact is, their venom is 15 times more deadly than that of a rattlesnake. They simply do not inject as much. Spiders don't attack humans, they accidently come in contact with them---usually through the fault of the human!
HOMEOWNERS: Don't leave gloves, shoes or boots outside, and make sure to thoroughly check them for sleeping spiders before putting them on.
BIRDS AND RODENTS
Birds and rodents, in fact all insects are attracted to areas where there is plenty of food, water and a harborage. HOMEOWNERS: Pick up pet food and don't leave open bowls or containers outside or you will attract not only bugs, but rodents and pigeons will be enticed to nest in the area as well.
BED BUGS
Bed bugs can hitch a ride on luggage or bags during travel, and are once again becoming a problem pest throughout the United States. HOMEOWNERS: When you get home open your suitcases in the garage, and put everything in the laundry. Oh, and at the hotel, never put your suitcase on the bed---it's the most likely place that bed bugs will be hiding!
COCKROACHES
Cockroaches are associated with many disease-carrying organisms but there is no scientific proof linking them to disease transmission. However, dried cockroach skin can cause allergic reaction in sensitive people and asthmatic patients. Cockroaches can get through an opening that is ½ inch or greater. Homeowners: Make certain to carefully check all packages you bring into your home to make certain they're not carrying any unwanted “critters”!
